I have curly hair and when I try to straighten it with a brush and blow-dryer, I just get big frizz. What should I do for a smooth look?
(previously published in The Experts Magazine)

Answer: It takes a lot of practice to co-ordinate the use of a brush and blow-dryer. That requires two hands, and most of us can barely manage with one. There are a couple of styling tools that I have in mind that can help you. They are the new Ceramic or Ionic Stylers that will allow you to heat style your hair, and still keep its integrity.

Ceramic Surface:
- creates smooth silky hair and eliminates frizz.
- spreads heat evenly for faster styling
- eliminates damaging hot spots
- emits negative ions which enhance and renew the vitality of the hair.

For wavy to moderately curly hair, I would recommend the Ionic Hot Air Styler. It is a round, ceramic coated, hot air brush with a cool tip at the end, most commonly 1 ΒΌ inch in diameter.

1. Apply the styling products recommended by your stylist (include a thermal styler to protect the hair from heat)
2. Rough-dry the hair with a blow-dryer and fingers to remove excess water.
3. Brush through with the hot air styler from scalp to ends for a smooth look, or roll sections of hair like a curler, for volume with a slight curl to the ends (just make sure you unwind in exactly the same direction to avoid tangling).

For moderately to very curly hair, I recommend the Ionic Flat Iron with slim plates, keeping it light and easy to use.

1. Apply product and rough-dry as usual. Thermal protector is a must, as these irons get very hot.
2. Section the hair and, starting at the bottom, place a small section of hair between the plates, close, and slowly slide from scalp to ends. It's almost as good as taking your stylist home with you.
