Perfume

Your outfit is great, your makeup is flawless and your new haircut looks fabulous. Your shoes and purse match, your jewelry sparkles and you are ready for the evening. But wait, isn’t there something missing? You are not fully dressed yet – you forgot your perfume.

Perfume can be your signature – its individual– its part of who you are. The right scent can make you feel sensual and beautiful. There was likely none more beautiful than the queen of ancient Egypt, Cleopatra, who used perfume lavishly and stole the heart of the Roman politician, Mark Antony.

Perfume has been a very important part of the history of the world. Incense was the first form of perfume discovered and has likely influenced the name, as perfume comes from the Latin phrase “per” mean “through” and “fumus” meaning smoke.
Incense was used in many religious ceremonies in ancient times and was also used for embalming the dead. There is frequent mention of the word fragrance in the Bible. Frankincense and myrrh are probably the more famous fragrances for, in the New Testament, the three wise men brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus. Incense is still in use today in Catholic and High Episcipal churches.

Until the Arabian doctor/chemist named Avicenna came along, all liquid perfumes were mixtures of oil and crushed herbs or flowers, which made a strong blend. He experimented with extracting oils from rose petals by means of distillation, a method which is still used today. This rose water was more delicate and resembled perfume as we know it.

Today, of course we have many choices of scents available to us, each with its own intricate formula.
