Winter is just around the corner, and with it comes the snow season. Those white flakes on the ground are not usually very welcome, but even worse, are white flakes on the shoulders. That is usually dandruff and affects many people.
Dandruff is a disorder of the scalp called PITYRIASIS. An overabundance of epithelial cells (or skin cells) accumulate on the scalp and often fall to the shoulders. There are two types of dandruff: 1) Pityriasis steatoides (greasy, waxy dandruff). Epithelial cells combine with sebum (oil) and stick to the scalp in clusters. It is usually quite itchy. Medical treatment is advisable. 2) Pityriasis capitis simplex (simple dandruff) can be itchy as well.. It can be caused by poor circulation, poor diet, uncleanliness or emotional disturbance.
Treatment:
- Cleanse and massage the scalp often with a mild shampoo or a medicated/antiseptic shampoo. Most salons carry special shampoos for treating simple dandruff.
- Always massage the scalp vigorously and rinse thoroughly. Leaving a residue of shampoo in the hair will only attract dirt and oil and compound the problem. A mixture of apple cider vinegar and water for a final rinse can help to ensure that the shampoo is sufficiently rinsed out.
- Professional scalp treatments can help greatly if done on a regular basis. Bioscal Scalp Treatments are effective as well as very relaxing. They involve:
- 1) the use of a heat cap to assist in penetration of the product.
- 2) scalp massage and manipulations to promote circulation, loosen the scalp and stimulate the nerves.
- 3) thorough cleansing of the scalp and application of a leave-in treatment to continue benefits for hours after the treatment. These procedures not only help keep the scalp free from dandruff, but can also help reduce hair loss, and even promote some new growth.
